The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that pro-motes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advo-cating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.

In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient tradi-tions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.

In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between them-selves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Background For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

As Tanzania moves steadily towards middle-income status, opportunities exist to ensure that the fruits of development are equitably distributed, and that the most vulnerable members of society – including children and women – are not left behind. With this in mind, UNICEF embarked on a new country programme, in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, in July 2016.

This five-year programme, from 2016–2021, focuses on practical ways to realize the rights of children and adolescents. UNICEF's work spans seven areas – health, HIV and AIDS, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), education, child protection and social policy. The programme's aim is that Tanzanian children and adolescents, especially the most disadvantaged children and families, have access to and benefit from quality social services, knowledge and opportunities, and thereby have a fair chance in life.A

Duties and Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Representative, and in collaboration with Adolescent Task Force members, C4D and Innovation Specialists, other youth volunteers and interns and others as relevant, the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

The main task of the Youth Advocate is to participate in and to provide inputs to the Mid-Term Review process of the UNICEF Tanzania 5-year Country Programme, as relevant and feasible, and provide feedback and suggestions on how UNICEF and partners can strengthen meaningful participation of adolescents and youth in their programming. As part of this main task, the youth advocate will:
Support a review of UNICEF Tanzania-supported adolescence programming (including school clubs, youth communication initiatives, life skills education, alternative learning programmes, parenting of adolescents, supports and services for adolescent parents, etc.), to inform recommendations to strengthen relevance of UNICEF-supported programming in partnership with governments, civil society and adolescents themselves;
Support a review of current adolescent participation initiatives supported by UNICEF, as well as others, and assist in identifying opportunities and defining mechanisms for ongoing meaningful participation of adolescents, including the most vulnerable, in defining, implementing and reviewing UNICEF Tanzania programming into the future;
Help design interventions and mechanisms that create sustainable and long-lasting opportunities for adolescents to voice their priorities, promote fulfilment of adolescent rights, and provide recommendations to decision makers;

Other tasks include:

Participate in joint field visits, with a specific focus on gaining an understanding of the lives, contexts, hopes, opportunities and challenges for the diversity of Tanzanian adolescents and youth, including disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, to make recommendations on strengthening the programme's relevance to Tanzanian youth, including the most vulnerable;
Contribute to the review and revision of the UNICEF Tanzania Adolescent Strategy, and participate in the Tanzania Country Office Adolescent Task Force and provide feedback as needed;
Support drafting of meeting and programme reports, human interest stories, policy briefs, and other information sharing in support of adolescent participation.

Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement, which includes solidarity, compassion, reciprocity and self-reliance; and commitment towards the UN core values.

Required Skills and Experience

Demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of social issues, policies and programmes, including as related to education, health, nutrition, protection, hygiene, and others, including as they relate to a diversity of Tanzanian adolescents, including the most vulnerable;
0-2 years experience in youth leadership and participation;
Demonstrated experience working with a diversity of adolescents, including vulnerable and disadvantaged populations;
Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
UN Youth Advocates must be between 18 and 24 years for the whole duration of their assignment;
People living with a disability and females are strongly encouraged to apply.
